As of 7 November 2026, the tracked burnt area globally stands at 761,205 hectares for the season to date. While this metric remains below the 1,079,538 hectares recorded across the complete 2025 season, it sits substantially above the 20-year average of 400,617 hectares established between 2006 and 2025. Nationally, Spain accounts for 210,104 hectares of this total, with 56,715 hectares recorded within a 250-kilometre radius of Marbella.
The largest active wildfire events currently tracked worldwide have shifted largely to the Southern Hemisphere and equatorial zones, all maintaining Green alert status. These include events across Botswana and Namibia (47,564 ha), Mozambique (46,323 ha), Australia (42,038 ha and 27,364 ha), Brazil (37,632 ha), and an additional event in Botswana (26,620 ha).
Implications for Costa del Sol Homeowners
The local figure of 56,715 hectares burned within 250 kilometres of Marbella demonstrates sustained wildfire activity across southern Spain over the course of the 2026 season. In wildland-urban interface (WUI) environments typical of the Costa del Sol—such as residential developments adjoining coastal pine forests and scrub-covered hillsides—fire behaviour is dictated by available fuel, topography, and localised wind patterns.
Structural damage in these environments rarely stems from direct flame contact alone. Ground-level evidence shows that the primary mechanism of home ignition is ember attack, where wind-borne firebrands ignite dry vegetation, timber decking, or accumulate within roof eaves well ahead of an advancing front. With the regional season to date exhibiting elevated cumulative burnt areas, managing localised fuel loads around the property envelope remains essential.
Structural and Landscape Risk Mitigation
- Establish defensible space by clearing accumulated pine needles, dry undergrowth, and dead biomass within a minimum 10-to-30-metre perimeter around the home.
- Inspect structural vulnerability points, ensuring exterior vents and roof junctions are fitted with fine, ember-resistant metallic mesh.
- Audit dedicated wildfire defence infrastructure, verifying pump performance, water storage reserves, and external perimeter protection systems ahead of subsequent dry cycles.
