Ten weeks earlier: the July fire that emptied Los Flamingos and Parque Botánico

Sunday's fire above Benahavís was not the first this summer. On the afternoon of 9 July 2026, a forest fire declared at 16:38 on the boundary between Estepona and Benahavís ran into the wildland–urban interface of Sierra Bermeja and produced one of the largest residential evacuations the western Costa del Sol has seen.

What happened

• Roughly 1,000 people evacuated preventively, around 400 homes in the Parque Botánico and Los Flamingos urbanisations
• The Junta de Andalucía raised the incident to emergency phase 1 at 17:30
• The AP-7 motorway was cut and later reopened as the smoke column crossed the corridor
• 235 personnel worked the fire overnight; the municipal sports hall was opened for displaced residents
• Estepona, Benahavís and Árchez were later declared civil emergency zones, unlocking state aid for those affected

Why it should have been the warning

Parque Botánico and Los Flamingos are not remote mountain hamlets. They are landscaped resort urbanisations with golf, hotels and villas worth several million euros each — and in July they were evacuated in daylight, in good conditions, with aircraft overhead within the hour. Ten weeks later a second fire put Benahavís itself under confinement. Two serious interface fires in one season, in the same few square kilometres, is not bad luck. It is the new baseline for this stretch of coast.

The uncomfortable detail for homeowners is that evacuation protects people, not buildings. Once a urbanisation is cleared, nobody is left to wet a roof, close a shutter or move a cushion off a terrace. Whatever protection the house has at that moment is the protection it will have when the embers arrive.
