Nerja: eight aircraft and a closed road on the other side of Málaga

A forest fire declared near Nerja on 26 August 2026 required the closure of the MA-6102 and mobilised up to eight aircraft before ground crews perimetered it overnight. It was stabilised without loss of life or homes — the outcome everyone hopes for, and the one that makes these fires disappear from the news within a day.

The pattern along the whole province

Nerja sits on the eastern Costa del Sol, roughly a hundred kilometres from Benahavís, in a completely different landscape: terraced slopes above the sea, scrub, and a dense band of villas and rural houses between the town and the Sierra de Almijara. The fuel is different, the terrain is different, and the exposure is identical. Any house built where the urban edge meets unmanaged vegetation is on the same list.

What a stabilised fire still costs

• Roads closed, cutting the only access to hillside properties
• Smoke and ash across terraces, pools and ventilation systems
• Power interruptions during and after the incident
• Hours of uncertainty for owners who are not in the country

For an absent owner — the normal case on this coast — a fire like Nerja's is a phone call from a neighbour and then nothing. A system that can be triggered remotely, or that runs on its own, is the difference between watching and acting.
