Sierra Bermeja, 2021: the fire that showed what the hills behind Marbella can do

In September 2021 a fire started in Jubrique and ran through the Sierra Bermeja massif, the same mountain system that rises directly behind Estepona, Benahavís and Marbella. It burned close to 10,000 hectares, forced thousands of people from their homes across Estepona, Genalguacil, Júzcar, Jubrique and parts of Benahavís, and killed a firefighter.

A fire the system could not fight

Fire authorities described Sierra Bermeja as a sixth-generation fire — a blaze that generates its own weather, with a convection column strong enough that it stops responding to terrain and wind in predictable ways. INFOCA, one of the best-resourced wildfire services in Europe, publicly said the fire was beyond conventional extinction capacity in its first days. Aircraft were grounded overnight and by thick smoke during the day.

The lesson of Sierra Bermeja is not that the response was inadequate. It is that on certain days, no response is enough — and the only thing standing between a fire and a house is what is already installed at the house.

What it means for the Costa del Sol today
